‘Til the Cows Come Home: Local Youth Program Aids in Resolution for Dispute Between Federal Agency and Cattlemen’s Association

A dispute between a local Cattlemen’s Association and a federal agency has been mitigated by students — more specifically, a summer youth work program called the Clearwater Basin Youth Conservation Corps. “Cows go where cows go,” says the Mason Butte Cattlemen’s Association President Roy Busch, as he describes the longstanding issues of free-range cattle roaming onto recreational land managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) in Ahsahka, Idaho, near the Dworshak Dam. “They have a fence line that they put in back when they constructed the dam in the ‘70s, and for the last few years they haven’t…

CBYCC Program Preps Area Youth for Careers in Natural Resources

When asked if the CBYCC program helped her get the job she has today, Harmony Edmondson affirmed that it was indeed a stepping stone. “CBYCC introduced me to the tools, working on a crew, how that works and what that looks like,” she explains. OROFINO, ID --- After a summer of learning about trail maintenance, handling tools, and fire safety, the Orofino Clearwater Basin Youth Conservation Corps Crew saved their own hometown from a fire. Orofino CBYCC Crew Members Jacob Strahan, Sam Naden, Arden Rueben, Christian Norman, Malachi Kirk and their Crew Leader Brandi Bundy were on their way back from the End of Season CBYCC BBQ at the Big Eddy Marina on August 2nd when they spotted a small smoke plume on Ahsahka Beach. The crew pulled over to investigate the smoke, and found a fire. The crew grabbed shovels from their truck…
